the iron cowboy
As a photographer the state provides an endless array of opportunities to capture its beauty, its grandiosity and its uniqueness. As a sports photographer in Alaska, often times I’m capturing people who have come to Alaska to not only enjoy those three things but to also face the challenge that Alaska presents in those three attributes. Earlier this summer I caught wind via Facebook of a crazy attempt by James Lawrence, a triathlete based out of Utah, to do 50 full Ironman distances in 50 days in 50 states. Alaska happened to be state number two along that 50-day challenge. Lawrence is the record holder for the most Ironman races completed in a year (30) but even so, I was pretty sure he was going to quite possibly kill himself attempting to complete his quest.
For those doing the math at
home, Lawrence’s 50 day trek
totaled 5,600 miles biked, 1,310
miles run and 120 miles swam.
As a photographer, I’m always interested in finding unique stories and I figured, one of two things was going to happen here: A) He’s going to complete all 50 or B) He’s going to kill himself trying. In any event, having some photos of this crazy guy wouldn’t be a bad idea. (Spoiler Alert: The final answer was A).
